Cyber Security Awareness Month - Navigating AI with Confidence
October is #CyberSecurityAwarenessMonth and this year we are looking at navigating Artificial Intelligence (AI). As AI becomes a bigger part of our daily lives, from writing assistance to data analysis, it's important to stay informed on how we can stay protected while using these tools.
Read on to learn more from our interview with Frank Post, OPB’s Corporate Information Security Officer.
1. What should members know about using AI-enabled tools and the considerations around personal information?
AI tools and services can be incredibly powerful, but it’s still important to remember that AI systems learn by analyzing data. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use them, but just like with any piece of technology, it’s smart to pause and think before entering anything personal or sensitive, a category that could include Social Insurance Numbers, birth dates, or banking, credit card, or health information. A little caution helps keep your data safe while still enjoying the benefits of these tools. If you wouldn’t share something in a public setting, think twice before sharing it with an AI-powered tool.
2. How can consumers assess whether an AI-enabled app or digital service is secure and trustworthy?
Before using any AI-powered app or website, take a quick look at who’s behind it. Is it a reputable or known company? Do they have a clear privacy policy provided on their website? Reputable apps will tell you if your data is stored, shared, or used to further train AI systems. Without this, companies may use your information without your knowledge. If you’re unsure about using a particular AI-device or tool, you can look for alternatives. A little curiosity and caution go a long way in keeping your information safe.
3. What questions should members ask or consider when using an AI-enabled product?
- What are the benefits of using AI, compared to other resources?
- For example: trip planning and making an itinerary may be beneficial through AI, but you wouldn’t want to give it your credit card to book tickets.
- Can I use this without sharing any sensitive information?
- Who owns any data I share, and how might this data be used later?
- Consider the different ways your information could be used by a specific app and your comfort level with it.
- Has this company released other reliable AI-empowered tools?
4. What are some everyday technologies people use that already rely on AI for security?
Banks have been using aspects of AI for fraud detection for decades. An example is the triggering of an anti-fraud alert when someone else tries to log into your account.
Advertisers also frequently use AI. An example of this is your web browser: ask a question aloud near a Google speaker (anything with a microphone that's connected to the cloud) and suddenly you will see ads that address this question pop up on your phone.
Examples of current everyday technology that use AI include:
- Your Apple Watch; it has fall-detection and will verbally ask you if you need help.
- Car manufacturers use AI technology in their integrated connectivity platforms in their vehicles that provide features like Automatic Crash Response, Stolen Vehicle Assistance, and 24/7 emergency services.
- Smart home simplifies your life through AI controlled thermostats, alarms, and other controls.
5. What other steps can members take?
Some of the basics around internet safety still apply, like using strong, unique passwords, keeping apps and other software up to date, and using privacy settings.
Before using an AI tool or service, take a moment to check which company is behind it and whether they’re trustworthy. A little research and good judgement can help you choose tools that align with your comfort level and keep your information safe.
